From the early 1900’s until approximately 1950, the identity of Greece changed dramatically, through wars, political turmoil, and civil unrest. Rather than a simple “sinavlia”, or musical performance, it was the initiative of the band members to take the audience on a journey from the parlours of Smyrni and Constantinople, to the dark and dingy hash den “tekedes” of Thessaloniki, Athens and Piraeus, and through to the live cabaret style “bouzoukia”.

Along with a cast of actors, dancers and musicians, the concert will present close to 30 songs from bilingual Greek/Turkish melodies, to the famous “Zembekiko Tis Evdokias”, some of which were written and played throughout the darkest days of Greece’s history.

Outlining the origins, definition, identity, themes and connotations, historical background, musical styles, the three periods of Rembetika- including the famed “Golden Era”, famous musicians and singers, substance abuse, the onset of censorship, the demise, influences and further development into “Laika” style music and its revival, this show is also ideal for any students studying Units 3 & 4 Modern Greek, who may wish to focus the “Detailed Study” component of their oral examination on “The Rembetiko Story”. Furthermore, this is a “must see” show for anyone and everyone interested in Greek music, dance, culture and the arts.

Written and co-ordinated by Dimosthenis Manasis, narrated in both Greek and English and presented live, by the 11 piece Rembetiko Band, “The Rembetiko Story” aims to take the audience on a journey through the birth, development and glory of Greek urban blues music.
